The Town of Middletown is asking residents to take a look at their mailboxes to make sure they are upright and out of the way of snowplows during the winter season. The Town of Middletown will not be responsible for replacing damaged mailboxes during snow removal if the mailbox is not up to U.S. Postal Service guidelines.
A typical roadside mailbox should be placed where a mail carrier can reach inside without leaving his/her mail truck. This means positioning the mailbox about 41" to 45" off the ground and about 6" to 8" behind the face of the curb.
This photo to the left is an example of a mailbox that will not be fixed if it is damaged during snow removal operations. If you have a mailbox that looks anything like this, the Town asks you to correct it before the snow season sets in.
